Malik Hooker’s instincts against the passing game are almost unmatched

King was my second choice for a safety pick at this point, but Buffalo Rumblings grabbed Marcus Williams, who I think is a true free safety in the league. I think King gets there, but he does have a little transition to make moving from being a cornerback to being a full-time safety (he could also provide Miami depth at cornerback if needed this year). He will still be a great pairing with Reshad Jones, which will allow Jones to do what he does best up in the box. Selecting King allows Miami to put him into the starting lineup with Jones, using Nate Allen as the primary reserve, along with Michael Thomas, then Walt Aikens and A.J. Hendy battle for reserve playing time/special teams work. This also covers at least the first half of the season as T.J. McDonald serves his suspension.

Analysis: That was probably the most well-reasoned explanation ever provided in 11 years of the SB Nation NFL writers’ mock draft. If you look all the way back to the 2015 season, King was considered a first-round pick. He’s gotten picked apart some because of his size and speed, but the production is there. In the past two seasons he’s had 31 passes defended and 11 interceptions. King clearly knows how to play the ball, and if his athleticism can keep up in the NFL he could be a stalwart in the secondary. The pick makes the Dolphins seem pretty heavy at safety, but King could ultimately be a two-position defensive back.

“Malik Hooker’s instincts against the passing game are almost unmatched. Not only in this draft class, but among most NFL players. As a former DI basketball prospect, he has great feet and a lean body with great control. His basketball skills have already translated into great hands that can — and do — secure contested takeaways. He’s also a ball hog in the best possible way for a secondary player. nike_broncos_2535

The Giants have been looking for a true No. 1 tailback since Tiki Barbers retirement.

Michael was supposed to apprentice under Marshawn Lynch, then eventually step into his role as a bruising bowling-ball of a tailback after Lynchs sudden retirement in 2016. Instead, hes been traded once and released three times in just four seasons of NFL play. His most successful season came in 2016, where he started seven games for Seattle (who had traded him in 2015, re-acquired him, and then cut him despite solid numbers) and added valuable depth to the bombed-out cave once known as the Packers tailback platoon.

Jason Jones Mens Jersey The Giants have been looking for a true No. 1 tailback since Tiki Barbers retirement. For a hot minute, Wilson looked like he might be the guy. The Virginia Tech product started slowly in his rookie season, but finished the year averaging five yards per carry and looking like a building block for the future. Instead, he struggled through the first five games of his sophomore year before suffering a career-ending neck injury.

The Jets took Milliner with the ninth overall pick, hoping he could fill the void left by Darrelle Reviss departure, but injuries kept him from ever hitting his stride. The Jets waived Milliner with an injury designation after he was only able to play in eight games over the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

After Richard Sherman blew up and became a household name, it seems like every tall cornerback prospect has been hyped up as the next Sherman.Jean-Baptiste was one of those guys, but he never did anything of note and the Saints cut him after just one year. Naturally, hes Shermans teammate now, having signed with the Seahawks to compete for a roster spot in training camp.

There was a time when Stafford was leading the league interceptions

PARK — There was a time when Stafford was leading the league interceptions. A time when he ranked the 30s QB rating. When he was considered the worst QB the league according to ProFootballFocus. That time? Only two months ago. Now, thanks to a second-half flowering under new coordinator Jim Cooter, the Detroit Lions quarterback suddenly Gale Sayers Jersey is putting together a very respectable statistical. Stafford, never known for his accuracy, ranks seventh the league at 66 percent. He’s 14th QB rating, just behind Rodgers and Rivers — even though he was at the bottom of the league just seven weeks ago. the past month alone, he ranks sixth passer rating, trailing only Russell, Cam, Andy, Cousins and Smith. All told, he has 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions the second half of the, after throwing 13 the first half. That dip turnovers has been the biggest key to his turnaround, according to Cooter. I think he’s doing a good job taking care of the ball, and that’s offensive thing, Cooter said. It’s not just decisions he’s making or passes he’s making.

It’s guys being exactly where he expects them to be, and I think we’re doing a better job of that. Missed assignments was a hallmark of the Lombardi system, which was extraordinarily complex. Bad routes were issue last, and blown assignments up front became a critical issue this year. Stafford was sacked 22 times the first half of the, times by unmarked pass rushers. But the Lions have simplified the blocking scheme under Cooter, and the protection has improved. That’s also helped ignite the running game, which cracked 100 yards just once the first half, but now has done it five straight weeks. I do think that some of the changes that we’ve made have fit strengths, Caldwell said. But I have to certainly just give him a lot of credit because what he’s doing is not easy. It’s a complex system, and that complex system is not necessarily for everybody. You more people fail it than advance and prosper within it. He doesn’t have it all yet because it hasn’t all been installed, but little by little, he grasps it very quickly. Cooter was Stafford’s QB coach before the promotion, and earned the quarterback’s trust over the past few months. He’s worked to correct his footwork, and two years later, Stafford appears as technically sound as he’s ever been. While the offense has had its ups and downs, Stafford, as a passer, has Hroniss Grasu Jersey been far more consistent than he was earlier his career. He completed 60 percent of his passes last year, which was second best his career, and now is checking at 66 percent this year. That would crush his previous best of 63 percent 201And it all came together last week, when he completed all but three of his 25 passes, with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 148 passer rating that is a new career best. It’s been good, Stafford said.

I’ve never had a mid-year switch, where literally first rep with some of these plays and concepts were the first week London. I’ve never had that before. I’ve never not had offseason or that kind of stuff, so that part of it’s been challenging and interesting. But as far as the way we the game, the way we think about football, it’s been good.

Menu The Colorado Avalanche showed the Buffalo Sabres

Menu The Colorado Avalanche showed the Buffalo Sabres that a rebuilding team can also be a winning one. Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog and O’Reilly each had a goal and an assist Saturday night and Colorado avoided its first streak of the with a 4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. Statsny also scored and -Sebastien Giguere made 28 saves for the Avalanche, who rebounded from their first loss of the against Detroit on Thursday. We were talking here that this team doesn’t lose two a row, Duchene said. That’s the attitude we want to have so it was great to bounce back and go to 7. Right now, we’re rolling, we’re feeling good. We’ve got to get as points as we can cause we’re going to go through some adversity the and we’ve got to be ready for it and get as points as we can while we’re hot. Giguere said last year’s Avalanche team that finished last the Western Conference would have let a loss like Thursday’s linger. The we had last year, a game, it would have been easy to be down on ourselves, but guys were loose, they were a good mood before the game, Giguere said. We knew that if we play the way we can play, that we had a. Buffalo finished up a stretch of four six days and remained winless six home. The Sabres did manage to score more than one goal for the third time this. The Avalanche scored four times the first 32 minutes. That was more than enough against a Sabres offense that has not scored that more than three regulation goals all. It was important for us to come out strong, Giguere Shaquille O’Neal Jersey said. We had a day off yesterday and there was no excuse for us – having young legs on the team – not to be sharp right at the beginning. And that’s the sign of a team that’s going the right direction.

Foligno gave the Sabres some hope 1 into the third period, rebounding Henrik Tallinder’s saved shot and lifting the puck over a fallen Giguere to cut Colorado’s lead to 4. The Sabres outshot the Avalanche 16 the third period, but could not find the back of the net again. It took them almost half a game or more to get into it and we weren’t our best down the stretch, but at that point, it was a hard game to play, Duchene said. Statsny scored his first goal of the to give the Avalanche a 4 lead 8 into the second period. Cody Hodgson put Buffalo on the board 5 into the second, streaking up the right side and striking a slap shot from the top of the circle past Giguere. Duchene took a pass from O’Reilly front of the net and converted a power play 56 seconds into the second period to make it 3. Landeskog gave Colorado a 2 lead with 8 left the first, weaving up center ice on a delayed penalty and beating with a wraparound. The Avalanche scored before the Sabres could get a shot on goal when Duchene came from behind the net and fed O’Reilly on the left side of the crease at 8 of the first period. We wanted to jump on them right away, Colorado coach said. Our guys played well offensively the first. the second, I guess we started to back up. The Sabres’ first shot on goal came with 5 left the first period and drew a loud ovation from the crowd. Colorado outshot Buffalo 14 the first period. It was the second time this the Sabres have managed just three shots a period. We have to be way, way, way better, Tallinder said. We’re not playing hockey, that’s for sure. NOTES: Buffalo added rookie D Zadorov to the active roster Saturday and sent fellow first-round pick D Rasmus Ristolainen to AHL Rochester. Zadorov can play up to nine with the Sabres before activating his entry-level contract.. Colorado rookie C Nathan MacKinnon, the first overall pick this year’s draft, will face fellow Scotia native Crosby for the first time Monday when the Avalanche play Pittsburgh.. made 22 Steve Nash Jersey saves for Buffalo.

The bottom of the seventh inning of Tuesday evening’s Blue Jays-Orioles game

The bottom of the seventh inning of Tuesday evening’s Blue Jays-Orioles game, O’s reliever Jason Garcia threw a pitch behind Jose Bautista that made the Jays right fielder snap up straight. Bautista did not particularly appreciate that. three offerings later, he responded to Garcia’s pitch the way anyone — or any professional ballplayer who has touched one of Babe ‘s bats — would respond to such a perceived slight. He smashed a two-run : And after letting his bat do the talking, Bautista and Jones also had some words about the incident to begin the next inning: This isn’t even the first time Bautista has done something like this. Some late draft advice based on the many leagues which I’ve participated and the countless others I’ve observed through Fantasy analysts spend a lot of time debating which player to take at the beginning of drafts — Pujols or, for example. Usually, an article on that topic that discuss which player is better, whether it’s better to build around speed or power, to have Shaquille O’Neal Jersey a SS or a 1B, etc. That is fine and all, but I’m starting to think that the best strategy for the beginning of drafts should depend on who is available the end. Plan ahead, as colleague Salfino says. Play chess while everyone is playing checkers. For instance, I just finished two fairly deep mixed-league drafts. What I noticed both is that there were a ton of stolen base sleepers available late — Taveras, Carlos Gomez, Kazuo Matsui, Chris Dickerson, Brett Gardner, Bourn, Nyjer, Andrus,, and Emilio Bonifacio. These guys aren’t studs, of course, but are useful when filling out a roster, especially deeper leagues. I realize some of these guys are going to fall flat on their face. For instance, I was going to include Owens on that list and he just got cut by the White Sox, certainly guys such as Nyjer and Emilio Bonifacio might not get anywhere near the at bats they’d need to help steals. That said, it would not shock me if any of the players listed above posted a 40-steal ; each clearly has the speed to do. That’s pretty nice upside for late a draft., compare that to power hitters available late. Who do you think you can draft that late a draft that has a realistic chance of posting a 40- ? Heck, even a 30- ? Wood, if he gets the playing time. Billy Butler has the talent. And there be other names that could be argued. The point, though, is that the list of SB sleepers is much longer than the list of HR sleepers. That being the case, it’s even more important than usual to get power early. No matter what you do, no matter how much you neglect stolen bases early a draft, there be speed available late. Just grab two or three of the guys listed above late your draft ; chances are that at least one post a 30-steal. Just something to keep mind before you draft over Pujols or Kinsler over Utley.

Braden Holtby made 40 saves for the Capitals

Menu Boston, – Tuukka Rask stopped all 16 shots he faced to record his NHL-leading sixth shutout of the season, as Boston silenced Washington, 3, at TD Garden. We had layers of coverage all over the ice, backchecked hard, had all of the elements we want to have to get a win. It was great to that, said Rask praise of his teammates for helping the cause. Campbell, Loui Eriksson and Marchand tallied for the Bruins, who have won three a row and four of six. The perfect effort on the scoreboard by the Atlantic Division leaders was backed up on the stat sheet by a game which they did not commit a single infraction. It marked the first time since Feb. 24 Buffalo that the B’s were not whistled for a penalty.

Braden Holtby made Louis Murphy Jersey 40 saves for the Capitals, who have lost three straight. The killer instinct isn’t there right now and it needs to be there because we’re running out of time, noted Caps defenseman Karl Alzner after his club allowed the Flyers the first four goals Wednesday’s loss and then three to Boston. Campbell’s redirection of a Bergeron blast from the left side on a delayed penalty gave the Bruins a 1 lead with 3 played the second period. Eriksson made it 2 at 8 by beating Holtby to the short side from the left wing after Soderberg carried the puck around behind the Washington net and dished back out front. As they did Wednesday’s loss Philadelphia, the Capitals didn’t come to life until the third period.

They threw eight shots — as many as recorded the first two periods combined — at Rask, but he was equal to the task. Marchand flipped the capper into empty net with 1 remaining. Holtby was sharp the opening 20 minutes, fending off 10 Boston opportunities, while Rask had easier time with four saves. MINNEAPOLIS — First baseman Miguel Cabrera has undergone physical therapy, been given a platelet-rich plasma injection and taken hyperbaric chamber treatments as he begins to work his way back from a medial calf Major Wright Jersey strain, team trainer Rand said on Thursday. Rand added that Cabrera’s Achilles tendon was not involved the injury and that the boot he is wearing has a heel lift it to shorten the calf muscle so it doesn’t get stretched out. Typically, the recovery for this injury takes six to eight weeks. The team is hoping to have their back on the early end of that span, which would be the middle of. We’re hoping that he will be able to return the six-week time frame. That’s our, Rand said. It’s going to take time it takes. Worth noting ? 2016 NFL Draft

Can one of the AAC’s best teams take out SEC also-ran? I’ll be tuning to find out. 16. Bowl: Kansas State vs. Arkansas Alright, we be a little biased here , but this should be interesting matchup between one of the legendary coaches college football , and the up-and-coming Bielema. Arkansas really turned things around after a rough start to the , winning six of its last seven Frank Clark Jersey and beating Mississippi and LSU the process.

Their only loss that time? A 51 barnburner against Mississippi State. 17. Holiday Bowl: USC vs. Wisconsin, 12 Both of these teams had disappointing seasons , but they’re two big name programs playing one of the most-fun bowl of the year. Look up the history of the Holiday Bowl, , and then tell me you’re going to help make Chex mix instead. 18. Lockheed Armed Forces Bowl: California vs. Air Force, 12 We’ll make this one quick. Cal boasts one of the best quarterbacks the country Jared Goff, who could end up being one of the first players taken the 2016 NFL Draft. …there’s no time to vacuum for the New Year’s party.

You’re . How you know whether or not to yell at the TV April because your team didn’t trade up for Goff if you ‘t watch this game? 19. American Mortgage Music City Bowl: Texas A&M vs. Louisville, 12 A&M and Louisville are two good teams that played incredibly tough schedules this . The Cardinals nearly knocked off Clemson, losing 20, and lost close calls to and Auburn. Petrino has things rolling again, you’ll want to catch this team before it takes off the next few years. 20. Motel 6 Cactus Bowl: West vs.

Arizona State, 1 West has a great offense, and enters Fred Jackson Jersey this game with momentum, having won four of five to close the . There probably won’t be a whole lot of three-and-outs this one, and that always makes for good TV. Say what you want, Southern’s offense is a thing to watch. 21. GoDaddy Bowl: Southern vs. Bowling Green, 12 This game is going to be fun simply because of the clash of styles. Southern is one of the country’s best rushing teams, employing a power-option attack that helped the Eagles beat last year and take to the wire this . Contrastly, Bowling Green wins with its passing game, specifically QB , who threw for 4 yards and 43 touchdowns this . Like Kentucky and Appalachian State, Southern used to be FCS powerhouse before it moved up to FBS competition. Not sure if playing the GoDaddy Bowl is better than winning national titles at the FCS level, but whatever. 22. New Pinstripe Bowl: Indiana vs. Duke, 12 A great basketball matchup, and could be a good football game, too, as Indiana’s up-tempo offense takes on a hard-nosed Duke team the midst of its glory years under head coach Cutcliffe.

‘Mind games’ between Antonio Brown, Josh Norman appear likely

PITTSBURGH — The matchup between Antonio Brown and Josh Norman will be a physical spectacle on Monday Night Football.

But the mental battle is just as crucial, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said.

Watch for Brown’s sideline work in this matchup. Brown and Roethlisberger love the plays where it’s Brown’s ball or nobody’s. Roethlisberger will throw the ball wider than usual because of Brown’s exceptional footwork by the sideline. They’ve perfected the deep out route.

While Brown occupies plenty of attention from the Redskins, Roethlisberger won’t be afraid to spread the ball to young playmakers Eli Rogers, Jesse James and Sammie Coates.

Albert McClellan is expected to replace Dumervil and start in his first game since 2012. Za’Darius Smith and Matt Judon will fill in for Dumervil as the other edge rusher opposite Terrell Suggs.

“It’s a little disappointing,” Dumervil said, “but sometimes you’ve just got to wait your turn and when the opportunity presents itself, take full advantage.”

Dumervil, 32, said he had a procedure in the foot area this offseason and missed all of the spring workouts along with the first three weeks of training camp. He was activated off the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 22 and practiced for a week.

But Dumervil hasn’t practiced since Aug. 29 and was one of three Ravens players who didn’t practice Wednesday. Running back Kenneth Dixon (knee) and cornerback Jerraud Powers (ankle) were the others.

Dumervil is unsure about his status for the Week 2 game at the Cleveland Browns.

“I don’t want to start shooting out numbers and weeks,” Dumervil said. “We’ll just see. We’re working really hard, and the training staff is working really hard with me. Just doing my very best to get out there as soon as I can. So I don’t know when the time can be. It can be next week or the following week. I don’t know.”

Jim Brown: I’m with Colin Kaepernick ‘100 percent’

Cleveland Browns Hall of Famer Jim Brown is best known as perhaps the greatest player in NFL history.

“I disagree. I wholeheartedly disagree,” Brees told ESPN. “Not that he wants to speak out about a very important issue. No, he can speak out about a very important issue. But there’s plenty of other ways that you can do that in a peaceful manner that doesn’t involve being disrespectful to the American flag.

“The great thing about this country is that we have the freedoms that allow you to speak out openly about any issue. So I’m not commenting on the issue itself because any person has the right to speak out on any issue they want. That’s the great thing about being an American. But the American flag is what represents those freedoms. It represents the very freedom that Colin Kaepernick gets the opportunity to exercise by speaking out his opinion in a peaceful manner about that issue. бн

“Like, it’s an oxymoron that you’re sitting down, disrespecting that flag that has given you the freedom to speak out.”

Both of Brees’ grandfathers served in World War II, one in the Marines in Okinawa and the other in the Army in India.

“Listen, if I chose to speak out on every issue that I have an opinion about, that’s all I’d do all day. I’d probably have a hundred Twitter posts a day. But this one …,” Brees said without completing his thought.

“I’ve been on five USO trips, so I’ve had a chance to meet and talk with a lot of military personnel. I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the things that they go through. Also having family that have served and sitting around and listening to my grandfather talk about World War II, so maybe that gives me a heightened level of appreciation for them,” Brees said. “But when I look at that flag, I think about them too. I think about a lot of things. Like when I stand and listen to the national anthem with my hand over my heart, there is emotions that well up inside of me.

“Honestly, we have a lot more important things that we’re working on right here in our building,” Payton said

“Absolutely. I think Pandora’s Box is open. I’m very happy that it is,” Brown continued. “So many years, we had the great Michael Jordan who stated that Republicans buy sneakers, too. … And for a couple of generations it was about making money, not messing with your image. And the agents became the pivotal figure for a lot of these guys. And the agents kept reminding them that you have to be this all-American boy to make these kind of dollars and these dollars are astronomical dollars. So the money came into the culture and created a couple of generations of individuals who did not want to speak up.

Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott denies domestic violence claims to police

Shutdown Corner left a message with Elliott’s agent, Rocky Arceneaux, which has not been returned yet.

Elliott turned 21 on Thursday. The No. 4 overall pick in the draft out of Ohio State, Elliott’s jersey is currently leading the NFL in sales since the Dallas Cowboys selected him with their top choice this April.

A significant portion of the NFL world collectively groaned when the Jaguars reportedly hosted defensive end Greg Hardy for a workout. While Hardy remains a top talent, his issues away from the field — his alleged assault of then-girlfriend Nicole Holder, to be specific — have resulted in a lengthy free agency period.

According to an ESPN report, Hardy’s free agency will continue despite the Jaguars’ interest in him. A league source told ESPN that the team has no plans to sign Hardy at this point in time.

Mike DiRocco explained then why the Jaguars even brought in Hardy in the first place:
Sources told ESPN that the Jaguars were doing their due diligence by bringing in Hardy and wanted to sit with him face-to-face to see where he was mentally and physically.

In Hardy’s six-year career, primarily spent with the Panthers, he’s recorded 40 sacks. Last season in Dallas, Hardy brought down opposing quarterbacks six times in 12 games.

His troubles away from the field, though, continue to mar his statistical output. He’s only played in 13 games in the past two seasons due to the domestic violence incident, which CBS Sports’ John Breech explained on Thursday, when news of the Jaguars’ reported interest in Hardy first broke:
The former Cowboys defensive end was suspended for four games in 2015 stemming from a domestic violence incident in May 2014 where he was accused of throwing his ex-girlfriend, Nicole Holder, into a bathtub and dragging her by her hair from room to room.

The two battled last year, and now that Norman signed with the Redskins, they’ll play each other twice per season for the near future. Norman didn’t say much this time around, but there might be more to come once their first meeting gets closer.
